SYNOPSIS

In Prague in 1951, a senior Czechoslovak political official is accused of spying for the United States. Everything is done to force him to confess to crimes he did not commit. Broken by torture, he eventually pleads guilty in court, reciting a confession his interrogators made him memorize. After being rehabilitated in 1956, he emigrates to France and, while condemning Stalinism, remains faithful to the communist ideals of his youth.
